Shopping
Shops in Germany are tied to legally binding opening hours ("Öffnungszeiten"). Most shops open from Mondays to Saturdays between 7 am and 10 am. Some bakeries and newsagents already open at 6 am. In town centres most shops open "durchgehend", which means they do not close for lunch. Monday through Friday most shops stay open until 6 pm or 8 pm. On Saturdays shops are allowed to stay open until 8 pm. On Sunday most shops are closed. One exception to this is provided by bakeries. They often open in the mornings. Cafés and cake shops are often open in the afternoons. Many petrol stations have very long opening hours, even around the clock. As petrol stations sell groceries, newspapers and other articles of daily life alongside petrol and diesel, they are a good place to go when shops are already shut.
